Eco Tip of the Week - a diet that does not harm the environment

Between 2000 and 5000 liters of water per capita is spent for food consumed on a daily basis

Strawberries in January, cucumbers in greenhouses, fish from Vietnam - now at any time of year we can get the food we love, even though the production and transport is a serious environmental burden. The Earth can no longer keep track of our eating habits. Statistics show that we would not be sufficient even when the two countries to feed all people as citizens of developed countries. How to eat well and do good for the planet that feeds us?

Seasonal fruits and vegetables

Summer and spring vegetables like tomatoes and zucchini in the winter months is imported from distant lands or greenhouses. Vegetables that are not in season should be avoided as much more strain on the environment from products that grow in our neighborhood and the outdoors.

For example, when you buy a pound of Mexican asparagus in February, indirectly, buy and five gallons of oil. For comparison, in May if you buy a kilo of local asparagus, consumes only 0.3 liters of oil.

Meat

Environmentalists warn that we should appreciate more meat and that is what our table should not contain more than four to five days a week. If we eat meat only three times a week our ecological footprinting is reduced by as much as 20%.
In addition, we should buy meat from local and organic farming, the production itself burdened land, water and climate, and that way we can save on transportation and revive the local economy. Of course, provided that the country has the quality of domestic production.
